Egon Mendels Book Launch
Scenes from the Saddle
- Real and Imagined -
At the monthly General Meetings held at Jaggers Bowling Club, I quite often receive mail from Nomad members or other clubs. It came as no surprise then to find a rather bulky looking envelope addressed to the Editor. On opening it however, I was rather taken aback but completely overjoyed to find a personally signed copy of Scenes from the Saddle from long standing Nomad member Egon Mendel.
Attached in the book was a note inviting me to the launch of the book which was to be held at the Harley Davidson dealer in Buitengracht Street Cape Town. This was a date immediately marked on my monthly calendar – book launch Friday 3rd February 2006!
Parking always seems to be problematic in Cape Town, but how lucky were we when we spotted an ideal area just across the road from the Harley Davidson dealer. Quite some spread had been laid on with snacks adorning the counters and an open bar offering welcome relief from the rising temperatures outside.
Egon mingled through the crowd often reminiscing about rides from days gone by. Chatting to folk who he’d known for thirty years and longer, and introducing Regine Lord who has typed Egon’s longhand notes for the last fifteen years.
There were a few familiar faces that we recognized and chatted to besides John van der Spuy, Jerry Day, Ian Sinclair and naturally Egon’s wife Liliyane. Egon had the opportunity of taking to the floor and thanking all for being present. Egon’s soul purpose of course is to promote motorcycling which he has done for years and continues to do so.
I felt absolutely chuffed at being invited to the book launch, met some wonderful folk and had a great time! Thanks Egon and the very best of luck with your book – Scenes From The Saddle.
