18 October 2009 - Annual Orphan Run Cool Runnings and McDonalds - Jean Potgieter
Whow! Just give me a minute to get my breath back after a very busy day.
Sunday arrived bright and sunny with the good old South Easter ready to accompany us all the way. We arrived at Damelin early to be greated by quite a few bikers ready for take-off. Then a steady stream arrived (10'o clock start or excitement for the unknown?) and soon it was time for Krog to explain the route and everybody to be on their way. Us girls had to take out in 4-wheel quads as we exchanged seats with some very excited kiddies from Marsh Memorial. We distributed t-shirts and someone came up with an idea for them to wear the t-shirts for easy identification. I am not sure who that was, but thank you, it worked like a bomb.
Krog lead the ride to Cape Town, over KloofNek, pass the Glen, around Sea Point showing off the new stadium, pass Town, on the N1 and unfortunately had to detour through Paarden Eiland (compliments of a closed off Koeberg Interchange).
Once at Cool Runnings the kids (big and small) could not wait to get on the toboggan and have a jol. Ask Graham Aldis, he fell off, not once, but twice, and apparently on a corner where NOBODY has fallen off before. Devin and John Lee had there normal fight for first place, which left Devin's foot nicely imprinted on John's t-shirt on his back. Either one had no brakes, or the other had too much brakes. We'll leave it at that.
Soon it was time to move on again and we took a short ride to Tyger Manor McDonalds. Now here comes the tricky part. I can say with honesty I have a good couple of years behind me and today was the first time I played waiter. Did the order and all and I am quite proud of myself. Never thought I will this tale to tell, but I enjoyed the challenge - a very, very, hidden talent.
As all good things, this day also had to come to an end and soon we were on our way back to Marsh Memorial to safely deposit our young pillions home. From all the "thank you's", the excited chatter and the big smiles it was clear the kids really enjoyed the day.
I just have to quote one comment in the book:
"Ek het 'n oswem day hat". Precious.
Thank you all you guys and girls who came along and gave these kids a ride and enjoyed the day with them. Really appreciated and to Kevin and Rob for the "dolly licks" and "chips" on the house and also to Nomads for sponsoring the event.
A major big thank you.
