First ride of Season at Rondekuil

The first trial of the season was held at Rondekuil, Conterman’s Kloof on Sunday 20th March. The area was very dry and the river completely dried up. This however gave access to areas that are cut off during winter. The sections were set by myself with help from Hans Klein and Jorge Cardoso.

The first section was completely new in a ravine just over the hill from where the cars park. Tin Jordan found this one a few weeks before the event. Section two was in a dry river bed as were sections three and four which were consecutive. Section three, for experts only, was particularly natural with a large rock out crop to negotiate, though it did not take a lot of marks. Section five had a steep bank followed by a sharp left turn then immediately over a fallen tree trunk and then a very tricky right turn for the experts. Section six’s main obstacle for both classes was a steep sandy bank that took the most marks of the trial but was also cleaned a few times. The last two sections were the usual turns and banks typical of the area.

The entry of eight riders was about what was expected as some riders were away on the long weekend. There was a unexpected turn out of classic bikes, Tony had his Yamaha TY 175 and Montessa 200, Roddy his Bultaco Sherpa 325 and Hans his Yamaha TY 175.

New comer Brian Isham had problems before he even started. His right foot peg broke off. His father rushed off with the bike and got it welded while the trial got under way. When the bike came back, Brian tried it out and it broke off again. So it went back again and this tine a proper temporary job was done. Brian only started the trial when most others were on their third lap. When the others had finished I then helped Brian to finish and at the same time transferred the score onto the result sheet. Brian used to ride motocross and has obvious ability. Once he slows down and puts his mind to trials riding he could become very good.
