Spes Bona

The trial was held at Spes Bona, Durbanville and was set by myself, Jorge and Hans. It was one of those almost perfect days for trials with the weather being overcast, though with a possibility of rain later. Towards the end it threatened to rain but the worst effect was that it wet the score sheets. The trial was fairly easy, in deference to the recent wet weather, which had left the ground soft and muddy in places. The first section was on the side of the dam on loose shale and the second section was in a deep gully which we have used before. It is one of those that needs very few markers as there is nowhere else to go. The next one was an interesting one for the experts and involved the often used dongas. The following one was on a rocky outcrop and certainly the most difficult for both groups, clearly taking the most marks for the day, including the most spectacular five by yours truly. The next section was a variation of one used before on a second outcrop. Then on to six and seven which were consecutive in another donga. The entry to section six involved a small leap from one side of the donga to the other. Section eight was a new one and continued further up the donga.

Tim Jordan was back on his bike after a few weeks break because of his now fixed gearbox problem but had overlooked the back brake which was not working properly. Michael Krause and Brian Isham were both back after a fairly long absence. The clubman class was easily won by Anton Krause with a very creditable second place going to Roddy Mills and likewise third place to Jorge Cardosa. I was having a good ride until the end of the third lap when my rear tyre went flat. I tried pumping it up at each section but this wasn’t too successful and I think it was part of the reason for my fall on section four on the last lap. Afterwards I discovered that the tyre had split which was good enough reason for losing air.

Thanks to everyone for collecting the markers and to Anton for going back later to check all the farm gates were closed.

The next event will be on 18th September, venue to be announced.

Hans Klein and I are off to the Isle of Man again to ride the Manx Classic Two Day Trial on the 3rd and 4th September. Unfortunately Earl Krause will not be riding this year. Here’s hoping everything goes well and that we enjoy it as much as we did last year.

Till next time

Brian.
