Springbok Rally History
The Springbok Rally takes place annually in September and Nomads usually celebrate this event at the De Hoek Mountain Resort, which is situated 37kms from Oudtshoorn, off the road to the Swartberg Pass.
We have however deterred from this aforesaid venue previously and held the rally at the following venues since it’s inception in 1986;
1986 – Kokerboom Motel, Springbok
1987 to 1989 the Dune Park Holiday Resort, Plettenberg Bay
1990 – Die Eiland Resort, Upington
1991 to 1993 the Dune Park Holiday Resort, Plettenberg Bay
1994 – the Van Staden’s River Mouth Resort, Port Elizabeth
1995 - the Dune Park Holiday Resort, Plettenberg Bay
1996 to 2000 the De Hoek Mountain Resort, Oudsthoorn
2001 - the Van Staden’s River Mouth Resort, Port Elizabeth
2002 to 2007 the De Hoek Mountain Resort, Oudsthoorn
The purpose of holding this particular event is to offer fellow motorcyclists and their families a weekend of enjoyment without the noise, doughnuts and exhibitionist behaviour experienced at other rallies. The Springbok is an ideal rally to bring the family to, or those who have not yet attended any biking rally and are not sure whether rallies are for them?
The Springbok Rally welcomes the entire family and motor vehicles are permitted entry to the site for a nominal fee.
The De Hoek Resort is suitably equipped boasting a small swimming pool ideal for the younger sect. At the Springbok Rally there are numerous food stalls plus trinket stalls selling items ranging from belt buckles to studs, from beanies to exotic leather wear. The Springbok Rally offers a variety of games and competitions including the Miss Springbok and the Miss Junior Springbok Rally where the fairer sex walk off with handsome prizes.
As previously mentioned there are a few ground rules however, one of them being that no drags are included in this rally and participants are requested to keep things above board taking into consideration the presence of children.
Having said this, the Springbok Rally is a good wholesome get together where fun and good times are guaranteed. The Springbok enters its 22nd year and 2007 sees the Rally once again being located at the De Hoek Mountain Resort over the weekend of the 21st September 2007.
