Once again, a beautiful day for riding our bikes. Up early and off to Damelin to see if there would be more bikes and members on this ride than the previous one. Arriving at Damelin there were already more bikes and members. At 08h00 I briefed the riders on the route, and we set off without any incident at the traffic lights at the N2. Although the back half of the pack got caught at the red light, but they soon caught up to the rest of us.
The route was out on the N2 turning left onto the M5 and then onto the N1, continuing along the N1 until the Klipheuwel/ Stellenbosch turn off, where we turned left towards Durbanville and Malmesbury. This section of road was reasonably quiet and the one or two cars on the road pulled off onto the left shoulder to allow us to pass them. We all politely thanked them as we went past.
At the Klipheuwel/Durbanville turnoff we turned left over the railway bridge and then turned right towards Philadelphia. Approaching the narrow bridge, we were lucky to be ahead of the cars coming from the opposite direction, so all the bikes got through without incident. Going through Philadelphia we stuck to the speed limit and two kilometres later we turned onto the N7 back towards Cape Town. We then took the Melkbosstrand turn off and proceeded towards Melkbosstrand, crossing the R27/West coast road, which also caught the back half of the pack. Riding through Melkbosstrand, the back half of the pack again got caught at the only traffic light in Melkbosstrand.
We continued along the beach road going past all the small beach areas and there was some competition happening with lots and lots of cars parking all over the place.
Upon entering the big bay area, I turned right at the wrong traffic circle and ended up going through the back section of the big bay shopping centre. Popping out the other side, we were then on the correct road, but now I was confused and I turned down one road too soon for the turn off to Ons Huisie restaurant. Only to discover that the road was closed at the bottom due to a wash away. Back out the no go road I turned left and left again, again into a cul de sac road. Making a u turn back to the main road I turned right, then turned right again at the huge sign that directed us to Ons Huisie restaurant.
Upon entering the parking area, which was full already, we all struggled to find parking for our bikes. Fortunately, two cars vacated their parking bays right outside the restaurant and we were able to park about 8 bikes in the two bays.
Upon me entering the restaurant, the chairman gave me a look and he said he was not going to make any comment. Of course, we all know what that means. Nobody else will be nominated for the cog up award. I have broad shoulders and I can accept the award with a smile on my face.
Once everybody had eaten and paid their respective bills it was time to mount our bikes and return to our respective homes.
