Springbok Rally
History

After the Club’s application to stage the Buffalo Rally in 1984 in Port Elizabeth was refused by the Magistrate, in terms of the Government’s State of Emergency restrictions at the time. Pete Strydom, Chairman of Nomads came up with the idea of hosting a by-invitation only rally which would circumvent the restriction on gatherings. Unfortunately, Pete did not see it through to its conclusion as he was committed to attending a Wing Riders Rally, which clashed with the Springbok Rally date.

Fortunately, it was thanks to  Alison Higgs, Editor, Luderick Jacoby, Club Captain & Helewese, his Wife to organise the event which has been hosted ever since.

The Springbok Rally traditionally takes place annually in September and Nomads usually celebrate this event at the De Hoek Mountain Resort, which is situated 37 kms from Oudtshoorn, off the road to the Swartberg Pass.

We have however deterred from this aforesaid venue previously and held the rally at the following venues since it’s inception in 1986:

1986 – Kokerboom Motel, Springbok
1987 to 1989 – The Dune Park Holiday Resort, Plettenberg Bay
1990 – Die Eiland Resort, Upington
1991 to 1993 – The Dune Park Holiday Resort, Plettenberg Bay
1994 – The Van Staden’s River Mouth Resort, Port Elizabeth
1995 – The Dune Park Holiday Resort, Plettenberg Bay
1996 to 2000 –  The De Hoek Mountain Resort, Oudtshoorn
2001 – The Van Staden’s River Mouth Resort, Port Elizabeth
2002 to 2019 –  The De Hoek Mountain Resort, Oudtshoorn
2020 – CANCELLED owing to the Covid-19 pandemic
2021 – CANCELLED owing to the Covid-19 pandemic
2022 – The De Hoek Mountain Resort, Oudtshoorn
The purpose of holding this particular event is to offer fellow motorcyclists and their families a weekend of enjoyment without the noise, doughnuts and exhibitionist behaviour experienced at other rallies. The Springbok is an ideal rally to bring the family to, or those who have not yet attended any biking rally and are not sure whether rallies are for them.

The Springbok Rally welcomes the entire family and motor vehicles are permitted entry to the site for a nominal fee.
