2014 BUFFALO RALLY REPORT – BY DELRAE MAYER
Well the Buff has been and gone and was great! Luderick, Helewese and the usual gang with a few extra Nomads went up the week before to organise everything. James also joined them this year so I had to take the Bus Thursday evening and to my surprise it was quite a pleasant, safe trip arriving at 1.15am Friday morning where James was patiently waiting for me.
The weather played along this year, to our advantage as we had over 5000 entrants. Nomads’ attendance was reasonably good, most dutifully sticking to the shift roster. The late entrants queue was a nightmare most of Friday stretching out right to the parking lot. Bernie asked James and myself to give those in the long queue a free t-shirt each which we did, but of course as we all know there is always the ungrateful one or ten that actually wanted me to give them their correct size t-shirt to which I replied that I would be there all day if I had to size the t-shirts as well and that they could just swop with others in the queue. One guy refused a t-shirt but when hearing it was for free gladly accepted! Looking at the late entrants queue I really felt sorry for Luderick and Yvonne but they took it in their stride. I am just so glad the late entrants queue had disappeared by the time my shift started! Lol
Saturday morning was our usual mass ride through Mossel bay with quite a lot of bikes joining of course being led by Mossel Bay’s friendly Traffic cops who were really great. Most of the crowd had gathered at the Beach Front/Restaurants waiting for us to pass by.
The tent selling the clothing, caps, badges etc. was also extremely busy and sold just about all the stock. The DJ playing the music the weekend really played good music as did the Band. The winner of this year’s Miss Buff was from George and truly a very pretty young lady with a lovely friendly manner. The best represented club this year was “The Syndicate” and were proud to receive this year’s award.
The food stalls were great as usual, not that much of a variety of food but what there was on offer was very good, the schwarma and a pizza in a cone (very unusual) was a hit for me! The ladies doing the photos were a great hit as well, most people buying from them. Great memories captured!
The one hundred thousand prize winner was really happy to receive his prize, it was good to see someone really happy to win it. In the past the other winners didn’t show much emotion or excitement.
There were a few guys doing their burn outs but not as many as in the past years, they seemed to have calmed down a little, spending more time in the beer tent and enjoying the music.
Sunday came along to quickly and it was time to go home, thanks Nomads for a great weekend.
Be safe
DELRAE
2014 BUFFALO RALLY REPORT – BY JEAN POTGIETER
It’s Buff time again!
After making the weather channel a favorite for a week, Thursday arrived calm, cool and windless – ideal for a long bike trip.
Krog and I met up with friends Le Roux and Zelda and were soon on our way towards Mossel Bay, the venue for the 2014 Buff. We reached Riversdal in good time and after a most enjoyable breakfast at the Spur we were in the saddle once again to reach Santos Caravan Park about 11am.
Settled in, it was time to explore the camp-site, join up with old friends and make plenty new ones. The four of us did the graveyard shift on Thursday night and time went much quicker than we thought with plenty noisy and not so sober people eager to entertain. Friday afternoon’s duty was not as casual – actually it was pretty chaotic with “late entry” queues stretching all the way to the parking lot.
We were in for a busy Saturday – first taking the “Concours” entrants on a qualifying ride and then judging their pride and joy in the afternoon. Some impressive machines made this quite a drawn out and tricky process. Thanks Mike and Nic for helping out once again – we really appreciate your hard work and patience.
Other entertainment offered were the CMA stunt team, the Le Riche brothers with their incredible motorcycle balancing acts, Miss Buff and other competitions, awesome live bands and then, last but not least, the all-important Prize giving where among others, we again gave away a grand prize of R100 000. Krog got his 30-year badge and can now enter future Buffs for free. Just thinking about it, we attended our first Buff together in 1976 in Bloemfontein, riding all the way from Cape Town on a Honda 360. Those were the days!
This year’s Buff was really an incredible event with attendance up by about 450 people. Thank you to everyone who made it possible; our emergency services, those guys and gals in blue assigned to protect us, our sponsors, everyone who had a hand in the organisation, and every one of you attending the 2014 Buff – without rallyists there cannot be a rally. Just hold thumbs that Nomads will have successful negotiations and that this beautiful venue will be available for the Buff once again in 2015 and beyond.
A successful event, beautiful venue, perfect weather – what more could we ask for. See you all in 2015 and we will do it all over again.
Keep it safe on the road.
Till next time
Jean Potgieter.
