REPORT ON THE 2013 SPRINGBOK RALLY BY LIZL TODD
When we arrived in Oudtshoorn on Thursday afternoon it was hot. We unpacked & headed for a shift from 16h00 to 20h00. At some stage in the afternoon the most frightening wind came up and we ended up watching the huge marquee blow to the ground. It was actually scary to see how powerful the wind can be.
Friday morning it was up bright & breezy for another ‘scheduled’ shift from 08h00 to 12h00. By this time the wind had subsided and the weather looked promising.
On Friday evening we had the Miss Springbok and other competitions in the main tent. Without any hassle or begging for entrants we had 10 lovely ladies enter to compete for the title of Miss Springbok.
Paolo (the DJ) did a great job as MC, with a gentleman from the bar and 2 ladies from the crowd as independent judges, we had a very pretty winner, Danica van der Merwe, from the Wild Dogs, Western Cape. Runner-up was Samantha Ferreira from the Villains and third place went to Dominique Bendix from Dukes of Hazard.
Later the evening we had some beer drinking. A newbie for us was the Half Yard of Ale – much fun had by all who participated, just very happy I didn’t cover my face & clothing in beer – once it starts bubbling, there’s no stopping the flow.
The male beer drinking was won by Johan Schultz from Gordon’s Bay and the female winner was Michelle Liebenberg from the Clique.
Mr Boep was a showdown between the Clique and the Nomads. The title was taken by Rob Todd from Nomads.
We moved onto Mr & Miss Tattoo – the winning gentleman was Clint Connolly from Plumstead and we had a tie for the ladies, Michelle Liebenberg from the Clique and Natasha Pike from Table View.
Saturday morning was time for the Junior competitions and games. We had so many cuties entering and the title of Junior Miss Springbok went to Alicia and David was the young gentleman winner. From there we took the kids upstairs for games. What fun. We played with hoola-hoops, skipping ropes, spray painted hair, drew pictures on paper plates (a couple of really artistic little ones amongst them), and the favourite of all the games must have been the sack races. One father offered me money to keep his kids running…
After a short break for lunch, it was back to the adult games. I forgot the tyres for tyre throw off my request list and we ended up arranging another round of beer drinking. I definitely think this was more fun anyway.
The funny bikes provided endless fun and bruises as per normal. Shawn Jackson from Rude MCC took the 1st place, by completing the obstacle course in 22 seconds.
The beer drinking was taken by Angelo Ford, guest of Nomads and again by Michelle Liebenberg from the Clique – Michelle had practised well the night before.
The egg toss was won by Shawn & Viking from Rude MCC. The distance was so huge between the contestants, that I was worried the one lot would disappear over the hill.
Another short break and it was time to get ready for prize giving.
