Economy Ride
2011

20/21 August 2011 – Nomads Annual Economy Run, Nuy Valley, Robertson.

After lots of preparation Saturday morning 20 August arrived bright, shiny and windfree. We arrived at Damelin early to find some 4-wheels seriously invading our space, but managed to find a quick solution in a willing carguard allowing us to literally park on Damelin’s front stoep.

Soon eager participants were lining up to receive their instructions, road maps and times of departure and prompty at 10am our Prez Peter G was the first one on his way followed by 18 more. Mark Schreiber got his first bit of work as Susan’s bike would not start which left him pushing a stubborn Suzuki up and down the parking lot. With all our other marshals already on their way, Krog and I took a leisurely drive through to Robertson. As we had plenty of time before the first participant arrival, we tried out the Wimpy waffles. Comes highly recommended. Krog had a bar-one waffle and I had a banana and toffee one, with huge dollops of ice cream. Good stuff while you are waiting.

Our prez arrived 20 minutes early – guess what he was doing? It did not take long for all the others to arrive and after some refueling, answering questions and lengthy deliberation about the ride, all were on their way to Nuy Valley for some well deserved TLC. Mark S again got some work to do, when Pieter and Annette’s Shadow decided to shed an exhaust just before Ceres. With Jonathan’s and Mark’s help Pieter managed to get another piece of pipe to replace the AWOL exhaust, and could then safely make their way to Nuy Valley. Sorry Pieter and Annette that you could not complete the whole run. Then their were some who relied too much on their Garmins and did wrong turns, found answers where their were no answers, etc. Bad news guys, Garmin excuses don’t count).

Nuy Valley is the perfect environment if you are looking for some serious relaxation time. The rooms are all dressed in old-world charm and clean and tidy as a pin. I was truly amazed at the amount of details these guys go to to make their guests comfortable. After watching the Boks pulling off a rare victory over the All Blacks, Nomads were really in a good mood and supper seemed to fuel that attitude. To say the least, supper was simply delicious, and so was breakfast. Well done, Nuy Valley staff and especially Chairmaine who went out of her way to accommodate us.

Very un-Nomads like, most people retired early to bed Saturday night. Could it be the ride, the clean air or what??? Unfortunately Sunday morning the weather forecast was rainy and cold so most people got dressed for the occasion as they reluctantly mounted their motorcycles to make their way home and the real world again.

To our Mossel Bay guys and gal who did their own informal economy run – thanks for joining us for this occasion and well done on the excellent fuel comsumption – even the 4-wheels did not do too badly.

Thanks to Kevin, Yvonne and Nomads for the prizes donated. Much appreciated. Also to Nomads for sponsoring the weekend to a great extent.
