Krog got me out of bed way to early this morning with the result that by 07h30 I was fully dressed in my winter riding woollies and ready to go. The weather was a bit dull but with a dry forecast we took our chances not to pack raingear.
Shortly after we were on our way to be the first to park the Kawa at Damelin, followed by Andre, Wayne, Roy, Denise and Arthur. Thereafter I lost count as more bikes pulled in. Looked like a great turnout for the ride.
Captain H called the crowd together to give his usual speech and with all the left turns and right turns it sounded as if he was conning us into doing some figure-eight riding.
We took off onto the N2, then M5 where we briefly stopped on the Berkeley Off-ramp to wait for the guys caught at the robots to catch up. Then it was on to the Plattekloof Road (M14), left at the traffic circle towards Richwood (M13), Contermanskloof Road, (bit of a pitstop just past the silos) right towards Vissershok (M48), another bit of “go-slow” for everyone to catch up, through the suburb of D’Urbanville in Durbanville (by the way Captain H, there were three traffic circles), left onto Adderley Street (R312) towards Malmesbury, right past Fisantekraal, right again on R304, then N1, R167 and onto Cape Garden Centre in Joostenbergvlakte, our venue for the day.
Now that is a mouthful, and while all of you have your Google Maps and Navigators out to follow the route, let’s get on with the story.
At the Bamboo Inn we were met by members of our quad-squad, Mark, Yvonne, Sandy and some more and also a few of our two-wheel friends who opted to take a ride straight to the venue.
We were hardly seated when a friendly waitress was on hand to take our drinks and eats order.
I ordered a toasted tuna and mayo sandwich, Krog, Ian and Susan ordered brekkie, Mandy an omelette and Denise mince and egg on toast. Everything look good and I believe tasted equally good! My sarmie was surely huge and really scrumptious – and well-priced!
Good weather, beautiful countryside, great food and interesting conversation – what more can we ask on a Sunday morning. But soon it was time to take the road home again. Some of our members did the rounds through the nursery and I would not be surprised if someone went home with a pot plant in their backpack or pannier.
Thank you everyone who pitched this morning making it an excellent turn-out and a special warm welcome to Mark after his recent spell in hospital. Hope you will go from strength to strength, soon to be back in the saddle again. Welcome also to Gwen Rapley’s parents all the way from St Martin in the Caribbean and other visitors who joined us. Hope you had a super time.
There were 40 people on the ride, 34 members, 6 visitors on 20 bikes and 4 cars.
