To go or not to go?” was the question plaguing my mind as I lay in bed this morning. The past few days I have been watching the weather forecast like the proverbial hawk, and that 50km southerly wind forecast just did not go well with me. Forty years down the road on a bike, and I still DO NOT LIKE THE WIND.
Eventually sound reasoning prevailed and I was up and soon we were on our way to Damelin where we were met by a few early risers. While most of us made good use of the welcome shade, more folks arrived – rather in drips and drabs and soon it was time for our famous Captain H to make his regular speech.
The route took us along the N2, Baden Powel Drive pass Spier up to the T-junction, Polkadraai Road and onto Schilpadsvlei. Here we were met by Henry and Antionette, with Mark, Yvonne and Sandy arriving soon after. A short ride this morning – only approx. 45 km.
After everyone found a seat we were treated by a cup of coffee or tea on the house and then it was time to choose what to eat.
Most people opted for the farmer’s breakfast which consisted of eggs, bacon, boerewors, mix of peppers and mushrooms, chips and toast with preserves.
Rob had an omelette which looked good from afar, a few people had scones and I had a bran muffin which I would rate fair to mild – definitely had better before.
Yvonne and Mark enjoyed their ‘eggs benedict’ so that was a good choice to have.
Afterwards we all enjoyed another cuppa, had some good conversations and then it was time to return to the real world again, all but a few who decided they would stay and admire the vineyards, or whatever …
Thank you all for making it on the ride this morning. Welcome to Anton, Lee-Anne and Philipp who joined us all the way from Langebaan and, all other visitors including Wally who arrived and joined us for a chat when the dirty plates were already back in the kitchen.
Thank you also to Luderick and Mike who are always willing to make up the rear-guard and keep the pack together from behind.
There were 31 people on the ride.
26 members, 5 visitors, 17 bikes, 2 quads
That’s all folks. Keep it safe out there.
Till next time.
Jean.
