REPORT ON THE CLUB’S ABORTED BREAKFAST RIDE TO THE SACRED GROUND RESTAURANT, FRANSCHHOEK ON 1 NOVEMBER 2015 – BY JEAN POTGIETER

I woke up early and lying in bed, was listening for the wind and rain that was suppose to happen. But all was quiet. Eventually it was light enough to see the world outside. Although the cloud blanket was quite thick, I decide to join Krog on the ride. We left Goodwood in reasonable weather catching a few raindrops on our way to Damelin.
This morning we were the first ones there with Robert arriving soon afterwards. And then the rain came down. We were joined by Luderick and Helewese, Ian and Mandy, David and Tracey and Mike and Jenny. While huddled under the College’s stoop, Robert received a call and photo from Lizl showing us what their backyard looked like after a heavy downpour. There was consensus that Franschhoek was not on the cards and a venue closer by was a much better option. We decided to visit the Spar at Meadowridge Shopping Centre for breakfast. A phone call was made to Yvonne and Mark who were already on their way to Franschhoek but unfortunately we did not get hold of Henry, and I think he and Antionette ended up lone rangers in our quaint Huguenot town.
There was no pep talk this morning as Ian favored the shortest route to Meadowridge. The Liesbeeck river was just about breaking it’s bank and there were large puddles of water all along the way. This forced us to just about ride in single file not risking the left hand side of the road.
Luderick and Helewese never wore their rainsuits so they made a turn home first to put on dry clothes and join up with us again. As our wet bodies hit the deck at the shopping centre Yvonne was there with her camera and really enjoyed taking photos of our very bedraggled forms.
Mark was waiting inside and we quickly rearranged the furniture to make up a table where all could fit in. With a cup of hot liquid in front of us, the mood was very jovial with lots of jokes and quips going around. Breakfast ranged from traditional to health and burgers. I had an omelette which was huge. Eventually it was time to brave the bitter weather outside and make our way home.
Thank you guys and gals for a very enjoyable morning despite the duck weather and thank you Nomads for footing the bill. Much appreciated.
