REPORT ON THE CLUB’S BREAKFAST RIDE TO THE BEACHCOMBER BISTRO, BEACH RD, FISH HOEK ON 20 SEPTEMBER 2015 – BY JEAN POTGIETER

I was so convinced that it was going to be a beautiful sunny day and was quite taken aback when Krog told me that the weather is overcast and ready for rain. A quick check on the weather channel convinced us that there was no major storms on the way so no raingear needed.

We made our way to Damelin and had to take a bit of a detour as the normal route was closed due to the Cape Town Marathon. On arrival there were a few Nomads already in attendance with more arriving together with a few drops of rain.

John Lee made quite an entrance as he arrived on his immaculate 1978 CBX and had to undergo a bit of bantering for his non-matching Kawasaki gloves.

Ian did his usual lengthy speech and we were on our way. Christo and Liza were stuck on the wrong side of Liesbeeck Parkway and could not get through the crowd of runners, so opted to take a shortcut and wait for us at UCT.

The route took us left on N2, left again on M3, through Bishopscourt, down Wynberg Hill and Blue Route. At the end of the Blue Route we turned right into Steenberg Road, left onto Ou Kaapse Weg which took forever and down the other side. We turned left at the 2nd set of robots towards Fish Hoek. At the traffic circle in Fish Hoek we turned left into the Main Road then right at the robots into Recreation Road, over the railway line arriving at Beachcomber Bistro our venue for the morning. Our resident photographer, Yvonne, was ready to take a few mean photos on arrival. We missed Mark this morning as he was not feeling up to scratch for the long ride. Hope you feel better soon Mark!

By then the weather started playing tricks again and another few drops of rain came down. We soon took cover inside the restaurant where friendly staff were waiting to take our orders. Coffee and tea arrived swiftly and while the Farmhouse Breakfast seemed to be the preferred meal, John and I decided to give the fish a try and I must say, it was really good. We sat chatting for a while, needless to say the previous day’s Springbok defeat against Japan was hotly debated as well as the World Superbike races and who will come out tops in the MotoGP.

Soon it was time to leave again and Krog decided to turn left towards Simon’s Town and go over Black Hill and then Ou Kaapse Weg home. We arrived just in time to see Johny Rae crowned World Superbike Champion.

Thank you everyone who braved the not so good weather this morning and for those visitors that came along – hope to see you all again.
