REPORT ON THE CLUB’S BREAKFAST RIDE TO THE DUNES BEACH BAR & RESTAURANT, HOUT BAY ON 17 MAY 2015 – BY HALEY PETERS

When our “captain of the day” asked me to do the report I was quite anxious but thought “what the heck, give it a shot … how bad can it be”.
On our arrival at Damelin Ian and I met Luderick, Helewese, Krog and Paul who were already waiting. Our guests were Neil Schnetler, Gerhard Keuler and Lee-Colin van Wyk (whipping out his cannon … Yvonne, you’ve got someone covering the start of the rides.) Shortly afterwards, Christo, Lisa, Mike, Jenny, Johan and Suzaan rocked up. Luderick gave a brief run through on directions to the Dunes Restaurant and we set off via the N2 from Damelin onto the Baden Powell Drive turn-off direction Muizenberg. Passing Khayelitsha informal settlement, Monwabisi and Stranfontein Pavillions continuing along Baden Powell past Sunrise Circle into Muizenberg towards the Main Road. Right into the main road towards Lakeside, passing the fire station and continuing along, turning left into Steenberg Road. Passing Reddam and Pollsmoor Prison towards the Spaanschemat Road to the intersection at Ladies Mile Drive. Having passed a wine estate or two, a “cog up” occurred … details to follow below*. Ian noticed that ¾ of the group had disappeared and motioned to Christo that he would ride ahead to get Luderick to pull off with Christo and Lisa turning around to go and look for the MIA’s. After a short while the group arrived having taken a wrong turn at the Tokai Road circle, heading towards Blue Route Mall turning off onto the free way. Christo and Lisa was then no-where to be seen. Ian headed back to check where they were, returning without them. Tracey and I tried to do the “chat line” to find them but both couldn’t read without their spectacles LOL.
The ride continued (in the hope that the missing two would find their way to Dunes) along Ladies Mile left into Main Road Klein Constantia, towards Constantia Neck onto Hout Bay Drive. Dunes Restaurant is on the turn off to your right opposite Chapmans Peak Hotel (before heading onto Chapmans Peak Drive), passing through the parking area (near Wimpy), along the beach. We were met by our trusty photographer Yvonne, Mark, Henry and Glen who joined us before he went on duty.
The restaurant is situated on the beach front and we were seated at a long table facing the ocean. After about 15 minutes Christo and Lisa arrived to the slow clapping instigated by Johan. We settled down to a relaxed atmosphere, the weather which had been flipping nippy earlier on the ride, had turned a bit warmer, a few having found seating in the autumn sun. Almost everyone opted for the buffet breakfast consisting of bacon, eggs, beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, sausages and coffee. A few started off with the healthy choice but when it came to seconds, tried the not-so-healthy alternate.
After a hearty meal and catch-up-chats, riders started leaving for their various destinations. It seems the ride was enjoyed by all except for the wrong turn earlier, the latter the fault of Paul, by his own admission. He had taken the wrong turn* and taking everyone that followed, with him.
We missed a few faces but hopefully we will have you all on the next ride on 7 June.

Attended by 19 Members & 3 Visitors.
