Sunday morning arrived sporting some high clouds and should not be that cold – or so I wished. But we all know, wishes do not always come true.
We arrived at Damelin to find Mike, Sean, Rod and his friends Carol and Steve already waiting. Robert and Wesley arrived soon afterwards, More Nomads filtered in and at 08h30 Krog called all together to explain the route for the day. Ian and Haley arrived a tad late and stayed on their bikes engine running waiting for the procession to get a move on.
Well, Krog has been engaging grey matter to find another new route for the ride and we took the N2, M5 all the way to Sunrise Circle, Baden Powell Drive, crossed the N2, left on Vlaeberg Road, right at T-junction on Polkadraai Road direction Stellenbosch, through Stellenbosch, pass station, crossing Bird Street, right on Helshoogte Road and just before you take Helshoogte, turned right towards Jonkershoek. Our venue for the day, Ride In Restaurant, is situated on the road just pass the service entrance to Lanzarac on right hand side. Our quad squad was there to welcome us, including Yvonne and Mark, Sharon Sweetnam (all the way from the UK), Kelly, Nico and little man Storm. Sue, Carey and mini-mee’s Amber and Ryan joined us a bit later.
Well, we said it is breakfast with a difference. Surrounded by mountains, Cape fynbos and beautiful view we made our way to the restaurant, found a seat and had to stand in a queue to order. There was a great variety of choice, starting from basic bagal and scrambled eggs, and then adding just what your heart desired – not that it is always good for you. But then, that also came with a price and some people might have overdone it a bit.
Good reports on coffee, cuppacinos, etc. but Alistair was fairly gobsmacked at the kick of a double expresso. To put it in his own words “that stuff was like mud.” The food arrived at rapid pace and I don’t think anybody could complain on portion size. Surely these guys did not consider us stick people. I ordered an apple muffin with butter and cheese and it was positively huge but very delicious so I had it all.
After breakfast people started leaving in drips and drabs and Krog and myself sat chatting to Sharon and Kelly when Sue called with shocking news that Mike had an accident on the M5 off-ramp on his way home. Apart from the 5 broken ribs (which is more than painful enough) Mike is “ok”, but cannot claim the same for the giant Rocket. It suffered some severe damage which hopefully won’t prove terminal. Get well soon Mike, we are collecting telephone books!!!!
