What a weekend this turned out to be. Luderick, Helewese, Mandy and myself chose to ride to Paternoster on Friday 13th to see the exact location of the abovementioned restaurant. We travelled via the R27, the West Coast Road, encountering three stop/go`s due to roadworks. Slightly delaying our travelling time. On arrival at the restaurant in Paternoster Luderick noticed that there was a petrol leak somewhere on his BMW. Nothing serious at the time. We went into the restaurant and had something to eat. We returned to the bikes and as Luderick started his bike I noticed a spray of petrol out the right side of his bike. He switched off his bike and then fiddled with the fuel pipe, turned the bike on again and the fuel gushed out. Mandy contacted a friend who has a one bike Harley trailer, as the club trailer was in for repairs. Mandy and I set off back to Cape Town via the Hopefield/Malmesbury Road, only to find there were FIVE stop/go`s with delays at all of them. Finally on the N7, only to find there are major roadworks on the N7 at the Malmesbury off ramps to end up in single lane traffic on the North bound carriageway.
Finally we were at home, swopping the bike for the car and off to Montagu Gardens to collect the bike trailer. Having collected the trailer off we went back to Paternoster, again encountering the three stop/go`s on the R27. The last one was so bad that the traffic in both directions came to a standstill and one was able to chat to the drivers going in the opposite direction. Fortunately we moved off before the other traffic did. Upon arrival in Paternoster Luderick and Helewese had moved down to the hotel. We loaded the bike onto the trailer and set off for Cape Town, not encountering any stop/go`s as the roadworks were packing up for the weekend. We did however encounter heavy rain on the journey home. We unloaded the BMW at the Jacoby`s house and then went home to unload the trailer and then to attend a social in Cape Town.
Saturday morning Luderick spent repairing both his BMWs.
Sunday morning dawned partly cloudy with black clouds over the West Coast area. Pack in the rain suits to chase the rain away. Off to Damelin, where a large crowd of members were already waiting, including the President of the Club who brought his wife along for the ride. After the riders briefing we set off into Liesbeek Parkway, the N2, onto the M5 over Koeberg Flyover onto the N1 on the service road past Century City turning onto the N7. At the Melkbosstrand turn off we headed for the R27, turning right onto the R27 and headed for Paternoster. The intended route was to go to Malmesbury, but with all the roadworks and stop/go`s that was out of the equation.
We arrived at about 09h30 and settled in at the Skatkis Restaurant and started to place our coffee/tea orders. Then it was ordering our different breakfasts. Unfortunately this took quite a long time to appear on our tables. The price of the breakfasts was reasonable. Everyone having settled their bills it was time to depart for our respective destinations.
Mandy and I saw John Lee refueling in Vredenburg and we refueled at the West Coast Engen one stop. I saw John go past and I thought that would be the last I would see of him. That was not to be. About 5 kilometers before Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, there was John on the side of the road. Oil dripping out of the Kawasaki 250 and a puncture in the rear tyre. Thank goodness for cell phones. Neither John or I had the Bike collectors cell number. So I phoned Brian Hoskins and fortunately his son was visiting him and he had Steve Ressell, the bike collectors cell number. Now Mandy, John and I have Steve`s cell number. We waited about half an hour when Steve arrived and of course John had to take a ragging from Steve about the bikes that John insists on riding. We loaded the bike and then it was time to set off home for the third time this weekend.
There were 29 members, 5 visitors, 18 bikes and 4 cars attending the ride. BMW 7. Harley Davidson 1. Honda 4. Kawasaki 2. Suzuki 2. Triumph 2.
