REPORT ON THE CLUB’S MARSH MEMORIAL HOMES CHILDREN RIDE ON SUNDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER 2019 – BY IAN SINCLAIR

This Sunday the weather was perfect for riding. So, it was off to Damelin to meet with the members who had volunteered their services to spend the day with the children from the Marsh Memorial Home. Approaching Mowbray, I had to go to the Main Road as the off ramp to Liesbeek Parkway was closed due to the Cape Town Marathon taking place along Liesbeek Parkway. Arriving at Damelin everybody was talking about how they had had to find different routes to get to Damelin. A couple of riders had gone straight to the Home as it was quicker to do that than try to get to Damelin.

At 08h35 I briefed the riders on the plans for the day and off we set. Having spoken to my ex colleagues we were able to ride through the road closure of Liesbeek Parkway at the N2 bridge. Onto the N2 and then turning onto the M5, heading towards Rondebosch, we took the next off ramp to ride past the Red Cross War Memorial Children`s Hospital, along Milner Road until the turn off to the Marsh Home. Upon entering the home, we parked our bikes on the tarmac on the left and waited for the children to approach us and choose which bike they wanted to ride on for the day.

Once helmets were sorted out for the SMALL heads and the respective bikes had been chosen it was time to leave the home. Exiting the home, we turned left into Milner Road and again left into Kromboom Road and another left turn onto the M5/ Kromboom Parkway, towards Maitland. Continuing along the M5, over Koeberg Interchange and onto the N1, taking the service road past Century City, turning left onto the N7. At the Plattekloof off ramp we turned left towards Koeberg Road past the refinery on the right. At Koeberg Road we turned right and then left into Blaauwberg Road. We continued all the way down Blaauwberg Road until Pentz Drive, where we turned left and then right into the parking area of S.A.N.C.C.O.B. Arriving just before 10h00. Here the kids got off the bikes and proceeded into S.A.N.C.C.O.B premises where they were going to get a demonstration of what happens there.

All the riders then proceeded to ride down to the beach road, known as Otto Du Plessis Drive/ Marine Drive or Beach Boulevard and turned right towards Blaauwberg. We continued along this road for 3 kilometres and immediately after the second traffic circle we turned right into the seaside village shopping centre. Having found parking, we proceeded upstairs to the Golden Bay Spur, where we all had coffees/teas/cool drinks. At 11h40 I gathered the riders together again and we then proceeded back to S.A.N.C.C.O.B. to collect the kids. Putting helmets back on the kid`s heads, we then set off back to the Golden Bay Spur, where we all had chicken burgers and milkshakes.

Once everybody had eaten and the bill was settled by the Nomad`s Motorcycle Club, [A huge THANK YOU, Nomads] it was back to the bikes with the kids. We exited the parking area, proceeded all the way round the traffic circle and headed up the road towards Melkbosstrand. We rode through Melkbosstrand, crossing the R27/ West Coast road and headed towards the N7. We turned onto the N7 towards Cape Town, until the N1 turning towards Cape Town. At Koeberg Interchange we turned onto the M5 and then took the Milner Road off ramp back to the Marsh Memorial Home. At the home all the children had huge smiles on their faces and big thanks from the kids, they went off to their respective rooms.

I then called all the riders and drivers together and thanked everybody for their attendance and assistance as it is much appreciated. There were 21 kids, 2 carers, 23 members, 13 visitors, 21 bikes and 6 cars.
