REPORT ON THE SUNSET RIDE TO THE LA GRAPPERIA PIZZA & TAPPAS RESTAURANT, PAARL ON 2 NOVEMBER 2014 – BY JEAN POTGIETER

We had to blame Andre. If he just done the normal breakfast run, Krog and I would not have made the very unwise decision to clean, move and repack about 500 bricks, ready for reuse. So when it was time to get ready for the ride, the two of us were pretty knackered and had a hard time rising from the comforts of the couch.
The weather was good and when we arrived at Damelin we were met by James and Delrae and Paul and Cornelia lurking in the shadow of the overhanging tree branches, hiding from the fierce sun. More Nomads arrived and we stood around chatting making up some time until Andre called everyone together. Captain H gave us a choice: the short route or the long route. Everyone opted for the short route which took us onto the N2, Baden Powell Drive (R310), through Stellenbosch, over Hellshoogte, R44, R101 (Old Paarl Road), Suid-Agter Paarl Road, past Fairview estate and onto the Spice Route to Grapperia Pizza & Tappas Restaurant, our venue for the evening. It was pretty windy all the way and the two potholes in the road just after turning onto the R44 had me momentously completely off my seat. Bit of a nasty surprise that one.
We were met by the 4-wheel brigade consisting of Mark, Yvonne, Sandy, Henry and Antionette, Helewese and Glen, Roy and Patti and Marcelle, Paul and daughters’. If I left someone out, I apologise, not intended.
As it still was quite warm it was decided to take up seats under the trees. Everyone ordered something to drink and then it was decision time on the eats. I ordered calamari and the others opted for various pizzas. The food looked good, tasted good and excellent value for money. As the sun set we popped some champagne (compliments of Nomads) and sat chatting a bit more, just soaking in the wonderful landscape and relaxed atmosphere. Soon it was time to get back in the saddle and head home in the dark. Back home we were just in time to grab a cup of tea and sit back and relax watching the races.
The ride was well attended by about 30+ people. Thank you everyone for turning up and making this ride most enjoyable.
That is all till next time.
Take care.
Jean.
